Tell us about yourself.
My name is Shannon Conlin, I’m 37 and live in Charlotte, North Carolina. I graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a degree in Fashion Design. I live with my awesome boyfriend Joe and our equally awesome cat Ramona.
What do you make?
I love doing all kinds of art but have been focusing mainly on jewelry design for some time. My current obsession is creating porcelain pieces to use in my designs. I love getting my hands dirty!
What inspires you & what is your creative process?
I am so inspired by other artists. I love to see how people evolve into their own unique style. It really motivates me to work hard to do the same! My creative process usually involves me sitting in front of all my beads and supplies and intuitively putting stuff together. I like to be able to see most of my beads so things are usually spread out all over the place! I also have to have some music playing – right now I am really into the Be Good Tanyas.
Where is your studio and how has it evolved? What is your plan for it in the future?
Right now I have our spare bedroom set up as my studio. I am not sure it has evolved too much – except for maybe into more of a mess! In the future I would like to have a bigger space to work – although I like being at home. I can work any time of the day or night – whenever inspiration strikes!
What tools & equipment do you use?
I use lots of tools while I’m working – files, a tiny anvil and hammer and all kinds of pliers. I also use tools in the clay studio while making porcelain pieces – stamps, cutters, rollers and of course, the ultimate tool – my hands!
What else do you do? Is this your full time gig?
I also work in an art gallery here in Charlotte. I enjoy meeting other creative people and have made some good contacts this way!
What do you hope to get out of this, what are your goals?
My goal is to be able to work part time – because I love my job – and do etsy part time. Between the two I hope to make full time money!
How do you promote yourself?
I do a lot of online promoting. I have a flickr page and I belong to several social networks like indiepublic. I try to post a lot in forums – you can meet tons of people that way. I give my card to lots of people and maintain a good email list. I also try to do as many shows and sales as I can!
