My reading has forced me to think about my business in a completely different way. It is basically having me start the entire process over (kind of). At the heart of the E Myth and running a business is the WHY:: Why did I start my business? Why is it worth spending time and money on? Why should other people want to purchase what I sell? Why should people want to work for me? I guess I had kind of forgotten the why. I guess I assumed it was normal to let it get away from me while I attend to other things (like running a business). The book has made me realize that in order for my company to be a success, I need to have the why at the forefront of my mind, my customer’s minds and my employee’s minds or else we have no idea what our purpose is. So here it is. I warn you, its a little long, but it’s my passion so humor me.
PAPER::I have a deep love of paper. The look, the feel, the smell. I love to run my fingers over different finishes and know that each one is meant to communicate something different. Moreover, I love the way ink lays on paper, mingles with paper, becomes one with paper to become something new. The way that lines and colors and shapes dance on a field of white paper stimulates something deep inside me that I can’t truly explain. You can take a piece of paper and fold it and manipulate it until it becomes something completely different, you can turn a piece of paper into anything. Paper is so natural and earthy.
PERSONAL::Sending a letter is so honest and unique and beautiful. Everyone has their own handwritting and verbal style so that no two letters are ever really the same. A letter sent from me could never be mistaken for one sent from someone else. I think that letters can be so honest and truthful. Writing a letter can be akin to writing in a journal. You are by yourself and your thoughts and feelings can just flow like the ink from the pen onto the paper. Writing a letter is such a human experience which is why I love handmade stationery that someone will write on and then take to the post office to be hand stamped and then placed by hand in the recipients mailbox. And finally, to be opened and consumed by someone that has been awaiting just such a letter.
COMMUNICATION::At the heart, Avie Designs is about communication. Real human communication. As I get older, I realize more and more that good friends don’t just happen by all the time. That people move away and begin their own lives and take a small part of you with them. I also know that they can become a part of your history if you don’t make the effort to stay in touch. And I know that getting an unexpected note in the mail from someone you miss can make your week.
I make bright, fun, modern stationery to remind us all that writing a letter should be fun. I make patterned envelopes so that the fun begins right when you open the mailbox. I didn’t just want to start a stationery company, I wanted to start a movement. I want fun, patterned envelopes to fly across the country and the world. I want long lost friends, lovers and family to reconnect. I want to spread love, joy and laughter as far as I can and then start all over again!
Okay, maybe it wasn’t as long as it looked when I wrote it down last night. Thanks for listening.
