okay, so we all know that i have a great fondness for all things etsy. i think that they allow artists and crafters to make a living doing what they love and that is no small feat. one of my favorite things about etsy is the featured seller segment. they interview a seller and feature it on the home page so that every one gets a chance to see it. they change it up every few days for great variety. today’s featured seller is karen hilton designs.
anyways, as i was reading the interview today, as i do every time there is a new featured seller, i was struck by something:: the last question is always “in ten years i’d like to be . . .” okay, it’s not surprising that the last question is always that (they use the same questions each time), it is a little surprising that almost every person’s answer is the same::for example::
karen hilton designs wrote “Still happy with what i’m doing. I Would like to design a small fashion range. Oh & to have my very own studio!! I would love that!”
art goodies wrote “Still creating work I am passionate about, happy, healthy, and well traveled.”
alyssa ettinger wrote “Joyful, designing things I love, and both living and working in spaces–cottages or cabins or bungalows or cabanas–that feel like home to me.”
sketch book wrote “My dream is to be successful enough in my business to be able to purchase a small quiet farm with a large and pretty studio for making art, a place to have a decent size vegetable garden, as well as a place to raise some sheep, rabbits, goats, chickens, and cats.”
pearsonmaron wrote”Happy, healthy, and working in a bigger (and more organized) studio.”
maisy brown repro retro wrote “In 10 years I’d like to be doing more of what I do now, but better, more of it, and more organized, and possibly with cohorts. People tell me I need to send my designs off-shore to be manufactured if I ever want to get anywhere – the thought makes me physically ill! I like the idea of staying boutique, hand-made, and being able to maintain the quality and control I have now. But maybe with minions – I could do with some minions (I’m contemplating training up the offspring in exchange for pocket money).”
okay, i could go on forever, but i think you get the idea. they all want to be doing exactly what they are doing now and even better, they are all more focused on happiness than money. i don’t think that there are that many people out there with jobs they love that much, but a whole lot of them hang out on etsy.
